Pura Taman Ayun is a Royal temple. It is the Mengwi royal shrine. It is still property of the Balinese Royal family, and access is generally not granted to tourists. On my trip, however, I was able to go inside the temple and photograph, as you will see in the following images.
This temple, built in the 18th century, is unique in many ways. One unique feature is the surrounding moat. In fact, the most sacred portion of the temple, (the inner temple, at the center) is surrounded by another interior moat. Quite unusual by any standard.
The woman in the foreground, dressed in traditional Bali attire, is just returning from placing an offering inside the temple. Placing offerings in temples, shrines, crossroads, even on the street in front of the house, is a part of the daily life in Bali. Most people place offerings at least twice a day, to honor and appease the gods. Even expatriates living in Bali take up this custom. It is, indeed, a good idea to be on the good side of the gods that are all around you on the island. This custom, and the idea of living in harmony with the gods, nature and your fellow human beings, make Bali a unique place in the world, a kinder and gentler place. If we would all live like the gentle people of Bali, in harmony with our gods, nature and fellow humans, this world of ours would be a better place. |
